The Olympians’ 2014 retrospective review

By Philippe Serve

The year 2014 will remain for the girls of Olympique de Marseille féminin and their staff as a particularly successful year : a 2nd half of the season (DH) without any fail, followed by a victorious run in Interregion ; a feat in Coupe de France ; the accession to the D2 ; many recruits in the summer ; a very successful season first part in D2, with a 2nd place full of promise ; qualifying for the 1/32 in Coupe de France ... A review In details, week after week, month after month...

JANUARY

05 : Win and feat in French Cup 1/64 F !

OM plays Monteux, then 2nd in D2. Down 1-3 after two goals taken in 7 minutes around the hour and with 4 minutes to go before the end of the match, the Olympians achieve the feat to come back to 3-3 (Ben Abdelghani 86' and Ahmed, already OM’s first scorer, 90’), before winning the penalty shoot-out 4 to 3... A feat, the biggest in the short history of this team. A reference match for the future.

Video highlights

12 : DH Day 12 – Win in Le Thor (0-5)

OM resumes the championship by making the difference away thanks to Cathy Abou Deraa’s brace, with additional goals from Rubio, Anigo and Branchereau. But this victory is qualified by OM.Net as "tasteless."

26 : French Cup 1/32 – Out with honors

They had been through on penalties in the previous round, they are eliminated in the same way in 1/32 by FA Marseille (D2). An opening goal from Pourquiès was not enough. But the Olympians are out with honors.

FEBRUARY

09 : DH Day 16 – Win in Nice (0-7)

Day 13 date being changed, the match of the 14th postponed and the 15th canceled (due to Gardanne’s complete withdraw), the girls follow with a new big result on the grounds of OGC Nice, outclassed in all areas. A hat-trick for Cathygoal, a brace for Alicia Pourquiès and others goals for Saïd and Ben Abdelghani.

16 : DH Day 17 – Win in Toulon (0-2)

Pourquiès in first half, Ben Abdelghani in second offer a new win to their team. OM is ranked 2nd, six points behind Rousset but with one less game.

20 : Creation of the Blog and Tweeter account « OM Féminines ».

After 8 months as an integrated page on the site Women’s Soccer United (WSU), the first and only one Blog exclusively dedicated to OM girls enjoys independence, along with the creation at the same time of its tweeter account.

23 : DH Day 18 – A victorious Marseilles derby !

Thanks to Roffe-Vidal, Vignal and Marcilly, the Olympians win the derby against their neighbors of FA Marseille Féminin (3-0). Rousset having drawn, OM is now 4 pts behind, still with one less game.

MARCH

02 : DH Day 13 (late game) – Win against Rousset, first turning point of the season !

The Olympians are present on the D Day. They win the Big Match against the leader Rousset (3-1). Camille Perrin, Léa Rubio and Alicia Pourquiès are the scorers. OM is now no further than 1 point behind its opponent of the day… and is a virtual leader !

Video of the goals

09: DH Day 19 – False move against Aubune (0-0)

One week later, OM can’t spring Aubune’s bolt and let 2 points within reach escape, finding itself back 3 pts behind Rousset.

Video highlights

16 : DH Day 20 – Big score in Six-Fours (0-11) !

The Olympians wake up and Six-Fours pays the bill. Two pokers from Pourquiès and C. Abou-Deraa, with other goals from Pelloux, Rubio and one own goal… Pack it in !

23 : DH Day 14 (late game) – OM leader !

As expected, the Olympians take the lead in their DH championship after winning in Cannes-la-Bocca in a late game (0-3). Pourquies, M'Bassidjé and an o.g. propel them towards the play-offs... Two games are to play...

Video of the goals

30 : DH Day 21 – Qualified for the play-offs !

Beating Monteux (2-1, C. Abou-Deraa, Rubio) while Rousset loses in Cannes, the Olympians — 6 points ahead — are certain to play the pay-offs for the accession to D2.

APRIL

06 : DH Day 22 –DH complete

With the play-offs in mind, OM complete its championship with a draw at home against Mouans-Sartoux (1-1, Rubio). O&M rejoices about this Lux plus ultra by the Olympians who finish with 69 pts, 15 wins, 4 draws and a single defeat, 95 goals scored and 12 taken, 3,45 pts per game out of 4 possible, an average score of 4,7 – 0,6 and 30 goals for Alicia Pourquiès, that is 1,5 per match.

The game video highlights

12 : League Cup 1/8 F - Win in Mouans-Sartoux

A team with several changes snatches the qualification for the QF thanks to a lonely goal from Alicia Pourquiès fifteen minutes before the end (0-1).

20 : League Cup QF - Win in Toulon

With a complete team again, Cathy Abou-Deraa and Léa Rubio allow OM to go through straight to the Finale (0-2), its opponent in SF Cros-de-Cagnes having withdrawn…

27 : Interregion play-offs Day 1 - A successful start !

The Olympians begin their play-offs campaign leading to accession in D2 with a convincing win against Sète (3-0), built in second half (Pourquiès, C. Abou-Deraa, Roffe-Vidal).

MAY

04 : Interregion play-offs Day 2 - Confirmation with a 2nd win.

They played with fire a little bit against Mérignac Arlac. The Olympians lead 3-0 (Pourquiès x2, C. Abou-Deraa) at 88’ and see their opponent coming back 3-2. But they win nonetheless their second game in a row.

Video of the goals

11 : Interregion play-offs Day 3 - And that is three !

First game away and 3rd win in a row for OM who crushes Montauban (1-4). The scorers ? As usual : a brace for Pourquiès, and two others from C. Abou-Deraa and Rubio. OM is way ahead at the end of the play-offs first part.

18 : Interregion play-offs Day 4 - Setback

At the end of a tough game in Sète (one red card on each side), the Olympians hold on, get back twice (C. Abou-Deraa, Rubio) and bring a draw back home (2-2) which allows them to keep their 3 pts lead ahead of the opponent of the day.

25 : Interregion play-offs Day 5 : OM IN D2 !!

With still one match to be played, the Olympians make their access to D2 certain by winning in Mérignac in front of 200 spectators. Léa Rubio and Cécilia Vignal will remain as the scorers in what is an historical game for the women section of Olympique de Marseille (2-1). Anaïs M’Bassidjé can lead the dance !

Video of the goals

29 : League Cup Final – A treble for OM !

Seven weeks after having won the DH championship and four days after the triumph in Interregion play-offs, OM wins the League Cup, defeating Aubune away and with no contest (1-4), although playing without Léa Rubio ! C. Abou-Deraa (2), Vignal and M’Bassidjé make the nets shake.

JUNE

01 : Interregion play-offs Day 6 – An end in a blaze of glory !

In front of a large supporting assistance, the Olympians celebrate all their titles crushing Montauban (4-1) for the very last game of the season. Saïd, Pourquiès (2), Ben Abdelghani are the last scorers. OM feminin ? A HST powered by a winning mistral, O&M explains…

JULY-AUGUST

July-August  - The recruits are coming !

With the 2014-15 season in mind, when OM Féminin will play in D2 for the first time, the section is recruiting : Caroline Pizzala (PSG, 17 caps) is the most famous. She is joined by the pocket-striker Pauline Cousin (19 y.o., Hénin-Beaumont), a U17 World Champion (2012). The youth gamble is carried on with Eloise Vallet (18 y.o., Monteux, U16 and U17 international), the goalie Anaïs Hatchi (19 y.o., St Malo), Oumaima Maiel (17 y.o., Nice), Tess Laplacette (15 y.o., Hyères) and another GK, Amandine Théroux (Toulon).

16 August to 06 September - preparation and friendly games

The Olympians prepare their new season meeting one after the other Saint-Etienne (D1, defeat 0-5), Toulon (DH, 4-0, Rubio, Cousin 2x, C. Abou-Deraa), Nîmes (D2, 2-3, Cousin 2 x), Monteux (D2, 4-2, Rubio, Cousin, Pourquiès, C. Abou-Deraa).

31 August : The Blog’s name change

« Blog OM Féminines » officially becomes « OLYMPIENNES ET MARSEILLAISES ». The linked tweeter account remains for the time being @BlogOMFeminines.

SEPTEMBER

14 : The beginning in D2

In spite of an exceptionnal goal from Léa Rubio and in front of 500 spectators, OM loses its first match in Toulouse, one of the two big favorites (with Nîmes) 1-3. But O&M, present that day, writes about a “Defeat which calls wins”.

Video of the goals

21 : D2 Day 2 – First win, first big score !

A hat-trick for Pauline Cousin, a brace for Alicia Pourquiès, and OM takes its first win away, obviously historical, at the D1 relegated Muret grounds (0-5) ! The season is launched…

Video of the goals

28 : D2 Day 3 – A successful first at home

Aurillac-Arpajon, although a solid team, does not weigh much. OM wins 4-1, thanks to goals from Pizzala (her first one), Pourquiès, Rubio and Cousin.

Video of the goals

OCTOBER

05 : D2 Day 4 – The Claix pot

Big performance by the Olympians who win at the very last minute in Claix in particularly difficult conditions (1-2, Pourquiès, Roffe-Vidal).

Videos of the goals

October - Launching of the U18

Built with very young players (15-16 years old), the new-born U18 team begins its championship (7 players Football) in a thunderous way (0-17 in Mazargues). It will keep going…

12 : D2 Day 5 – Monteux discarded

The Olympians continue to rise beating Monteux (3-1) with one goal by Rubio and two by Pizzala.

Video of the goals

17 : Tess Laplacette called up to U17 national team !

Tess Laplacette, 15 years old only, a starter with OM and boarder at the French Formation Center (Pôle France), is called up to U17 NT by the new coach and former Les Bleues’s captain Sandrine Soubeyrand.

19 : D2 Day 6 – OM slowed down

Without its captain Léa Rubio, OM takes two goals in one minute but succeeds to come back (Maiel and Pourquiès) in Nivolas-Vermelle (2-2). Ill wind, everybody’s good.

NOVEMBER

09 : D2 Day 7 – A snatched victory

Down with 10 minutes to go, the Olympians change course and win in extremis against Véore-Montoison (2-1). Thanks, Caroline Pizzala and Pauline Cousin ! Nimes being defeated in Toulouse, OM is back two points behind the Crocodiles before their meeting on the top… Time for a first assess.

Video of the goals

16 : D2 Day 8 – The feat !

The Olympians take the Crocodile’s skin away in Nîmes (1-0, Pizzala), a real feat !

19 : Léa Rubio back in Blue

OM’s captain is called up to the B National Team. A great award for the former U19 European Champion and A international (1 cap, 1 goal).

23 : D2  Day 9 – The derby’s a failure

To play 11 vs 10 during 80 minutes, to lead 2-0 (Pourquiès, Cousin) with half-an-hour to go, and to be leveled at home by the FAMF (2-2) in the Marseilles derby, yes indeed this draw was worth a defeat. And the loss of the leading position.

30 : D2 Day 10 – Record set straight

Against Blanzy the bottom of the class, the Olympians go forward again (3-0). Cousin, Rubio, Roffe-Vidal make the decision.

DECEMBER

07 : D2 Day 11 – Thank you, Popo !

For the ultimate match before Christmas break — and the 100th of the Women’s section since its creation ! —, the Olympians — the match girls— played with fire again, equalizing at the very last second thanks to Pauline Cousin against a very good team of Le Puy. A first defeat at home avoided by an inch, and a Championship first half ended at 2nd place, 3 points behind Nîmes. With 7 w, 3 d, 1 l, 26 gf (best attack), 12 ga.

14 : French Cup 1/64 – A success and a qualification to finish !

A goal from Éloïse Vallet (her first for her new  colors) is enough to defeat ASPTT Montpellier (DH) and get a ticket for the 1/32 F where OM will find the FAMF again, as last year and for another hot-boiling derby (2015, January 4th)…
